Leo Oisíneach Mac an tSaoir, a young student from Pobalscoil an Ghleanna in Glenamaddy is bringing home a prestigious prize for his skill with the Irish language.
He was announced today the winner of the Young Translators’ Competition for 2023, which fosters the next generation of Irish Language Translators.
Speaking at the award ceremony, Minister of State for the Gaeltacht, Patrick O’Donovan offered his congratulations to the winners, and everyone who took part in the competition.
“This competition is a great opportunity for secondary school students to think about the employment opportunities in Europe for those with a high standard of Irish.”
“With the high quality of entries we see in this competition every year, I have no doubt that some of the names we see here today will become our colleagues in the European institutions in the years to come.”
This is the third year in a row that the Shield has been won by a student from County Galway.
Áine Ní Dhuibh, Coláiste Chaitríona, Armagh; Rachel Ní hÉarchaí, Coláiste Naomh Leoin, Carlow; Sarah Nic an Choiligh, Coláiste na Coiribe, Co. Galway; and Sinéad de Búrca, Coláiste Íde, Co. Kerry won the Ulster, Leinster, Connacht and Munster categories.
Each of the provincial winners in the competition received a Samsung tablet as their prize.
Also present at today’s ceremony were Seán Hade, Head of the Irish Department at the European Commisson.
The Young Translators’ Competition is a joint initiative between the European Commission and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media which is running since 2018.
