A historic meeting took place yesterday with councillors from Galway and Roscommon County Councils coming together in Ballinasloe to explore the potential of their joint areas.

The meeting, chaired by Cllr Evelyn Parsons, was the first time councillors from the surrounding districts came together to discuss their shared goals and plans for the region.

Cathaoirleach of Ballinasloe Municipal District, Cllr Parsons, said it was a hugely positive meeting between all municipal councillors.

The meeting was also attended by senior council staff representing both county councils and keynote speakers exploring some of the assets and opportunities Galway and Roscommon share in common.

Together with Cllr John Naughten, Cathaoirleach Athlone MDC, and the Roscommon councillors, the Ballinasloe councillors have resolved to together again in May with possible joint projects identified for a selective focus.

“The River Suck as an under-utilised asset presenting opportunities for focus was a common thread at this first meeting,” said Cllr Parsons.

“All attendees present engaged positively in this hugely exciting opportunity. It’s the start of what we all hope is a fruitful collaboration for the people we all serve.”
