NUI Galway will formally adopt its new name as Ollscoil na Gaillimhe – University of Galway this week.

The governing authority of the university approved the name change last April in a bid to end confusion over its official name.

The new name is meant to strengthen its identity, compared with the often used ‘NUIG’, which is not the official title of the University.

The new name of Ollscoil na Gaillimhe – University of Galway will come into effect from Thursday, September 1.

In an email sent to alumni of the University, President Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh said, “We have given this new chapter in our heritage both long and detailed consideration.”

“We believe passionately in our new name, as it simply reflects who we are, our essence and our identity, and our place in Ireland and in the world.”

“In discussions over the last year or so I have often remarked how we are in, of and for our place.”

“Our University, through our alumni, students and staff, has played a major part in the development of Galway, our region and more broadly, through the global recognition it enjoys today.”

“Our new name and brand encapsulates that sense of growing together, building on our strong traditions to shape together our promise for the future, for the public good.”
