Renowned Galway Chef and restauranteur JP McMahon has been awarded a PhD by NUI Galway today.

McMahon is the co-owner of Aniar, Tartare and Café Bodega in Galway City, as well as the founder of the international Food on the Edge symposium.

NUI Galway has awarded him a PhD in Drama and Theatre for research on the staging of food in theatre and performance through the lens of post dramatic playwriting.

McMahon recently announced that the Michelin Bob Gourmand Tartare café and wine bar is closing down next month.

Today is the last day of the Autumn conferrings at NUI Galway, with more than 1,700 people graduating from the university.

Professor Ciarán Ă“ hĂ“gartaigh, NUI Galway President, said: “On behalf of NUI Galway, I would like to congratulate each of graduates returning to campus over the three days on what will be a milestone day in their lives.”

“It is a celebration of their dedication, talent, and commitment over many years. We stand on the shoulders of over 175 years of tradition and the strength of generations of graduates from this university, Ollscoil na Gaillimhe – University of Galway.”

The next batch of students will graduate from NUI Galway at the Winter Conferrings at the end of November.

JP McMahon recently announced that the Michelin Bob Gourmand Tartare café and wine bar is closing down next month.

He said that the business, co-owned by himself and Drigin Gaffey will be shutting on September 4 due to economic pressures including staffing, and a rent review on the lease.
