A new drum programme using instruments from Galway 2020 has been announced by the Galway Roscommon Education and Training Borad (GRETB).

The Gaillimh Instrument Bank initiative will start in September 2022, with GRETB’s Music Generation overseeing the Galway 2020 instruments and annual percussion programmes.

Galway 2020 engaged with community groups in towns such as Tuam, Clifden, Spiddal, Ballinasloe, Portumna and Athenry, creating community drum programmes, with master drummers training volunteers within their local communities.

They were to perform at the official opening ceremony of Galway 2020 but the ceremony was cancelled due to severe national weather warnings.

Music Generations Musician Educator team in collaboration with their colleagues attached to Community Education will train and manage the volunteer groups within community settings.

Music Generation will also deliver percussion-based programmes in schools, camps and festivals across the county using the same percussion instrument bank from Galway 2020.

Those who are interested and who wish to participate and receive tuition should register their interest at musicgenerationgalway@gretb.ie and they will be kept updated on developments.
