Galway East TD Seán Canney has said that the electric charging infrastructure is falling ‘way behind demand’ in Galway, with no on-street public chargers available in the county.

The Independent TD said that he is aware of two families who bought electric cars, but sold them again as there were too few electric charging points available.

He said that the Government is ‘sleepwalking us into another mess’ when it comes to climate change by not making the necessary changes to match the demand for public charging points.

“With a target of one million electric cars in the country by 2030, the pace of building electric vehicle infrastructure is sporadic and is not meeting the current demand and if this continues we will never meet the expected demand,” said Deputy Canney.

“It is typical of a great idea becoming a nightmare as Government are failing to deliver. Ireland needs to provide a network of charging infrastructure to meet the expected demand over the next 8 years.”
