National housing charity Threshold has said that yesterday’s Daft report shows that the levels of increase in western counties has reached a crisis point.
The charity blamed the rent increases reported in yesterday’s report on successive governments’ overreliance on the private sector to provide housing.
In a statement, Threshold said that private renters and those seeking a home in the West and Northwest are particularly affected by ongoing rent increases.
They said that while the government’s 10-year housing plan may bring relief in the long-term, more immediate action is needed to relieve the burden on renters.
“Yearly increases of up to 25% simply cannot be borne by renters,” said the statement.
“It is encouraging to see the Housing Commission begin its work, in particular its recent conference considering the insertion of the right to housing in the Constitution.
“However more immediate action is required from the Government to address the increased costs facing private renters, compounded by the impact of inflation and the rising cost of living.”
