The ceremony for the installation of the new Bishop of Galway will be livestreamed tomorrow.
Michael Duignan is taking over the role of Bishop of the diocese of Galway, Kilmacduagh & Kilfenora from Brendan Kelly.
Bishop Kelly is retiring since serving in this role since 2017. His replacement was announced in February last.
Born in July 1970, Bishop Duignan is the eldest of a family of six, and his primary education was at Cloonakilla National School and St. Aloysius College, Athlone.
He has an extensive education in Theology and Philosophy from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome up to a doctoral level
He was first ordained as a priest in the Church of S.S. Peter and Paul, Athlone in July of 1994.
Bishop Duignan was appointed Bishop of Clonfert in 2019, taking the helm after the retirement of Bishop John Kirby, who served as Bishop for 31 years.
The ceremony marking his installation in his new role will be livestreamed on YouTube by the diocese.
The stream will go live at 2:40pm, with the ceremony due to start at Galway Cathedral at 3pm.
One of the final acts of Bishop Kelly in his role was to issue a statement condemning the “criminal and immoral” betrayal of trust perpetrated by Fr Tom Kelly, who sentenced to jail for abusing a child this week.
