A Boil Water Notice for almost 3,000 homes in the Gort area is now entering its third month, as repair works are underway.
Irish Water imposed the notice for homes and businesses on the Gort Public Water Supply on February 2, following failures at the water treatment plant.
The boil water notice applies to approximately 2,800 customers of Irish Water in the Gort area.
The problem has been identified as a damaged filter in the water treatment plant, and after waiting a long time for specialist equipment, repair works are now underway.
“We have carried out an assessment of the damaged filter and have found that the entire filtering mechanism in the failed filter had to be replaced,” said Ronan Daly of Irish Water.
This will include replacing all pipework, nozzles and gravel/sand filters in the system.
“To reduce the risk of this problem re-occurring, the mechanism will also be replaced in the second filter unit. This will then provide greater security of treatment.”
Pipe work in the repairs was due to be completed on Friday according to Irish Water.
“Thereafter, the new filter sand will be installed and commissioned. We will then move to the second filter, removing the existing filter mechanism and replacing it with a new system.”
A separate boil water notice for roughly 350 homes in the Eyrecourt area also remains in place after five weeks.
