Traditional music legend Pete St John, who wrote world-famous ballads such as the Rare Auld Times and The Fields of Athenry, has died at the age of 90.
Traditional music legend Pete St John, who wrote world-famous ballads such as the Rare Auld Times and The Fields of Athenry, has died at the age of 90.
The Fields of Athenry was written in 1979 and has become an anthem for Irish supporters on sporting occasions, making the Co. Galway town famous across the world.
Pete St. John’s songs have been recorded by many Irish bands and artists, including The Dubliners and Paddy Reilly.
He is survived by his sons Kieron and Brian Mooney and was predeceased by his wife Susan.
