Plans have been submitted to the city council to convert 17 apartments in a complex in Galway City centre to a self-catering apart-hotel.
Cornacloy Property Holdings Limited is seeking planning permission for a change of permitted use of City Point apartments to an apart-hotel.
Other works in the project would involve internal alterations, including the provision of reception area at the ground floor, and a staff storage area.
The 17 apartments are currently part of a mixed-use development, occupied by TK Maxx at the ground level, along with other businesses.
The residential units are located on the third to fifth floors of the building.
The self-catering apart-hotel would consist of 6 one-bedroom suites, 10 two-bedroom suites, and 1 three-bedroom penthouse.
It is not proposed that there will be any change to the 17 basement car parking spaces currently assigned to these apartments, which will be allocated to guests.
A cover report for the planning application states that there is a long established hotel usage of this site, which predates the construction of the current building, which was first approved in 2007.
It also states that Fáilte Ireland found in 2018 that there is a need for more tourist bed spaces in the city centre, which the developer says is still true, despite the disruption cause by the pandemic.
Galway City Council is due to make a decision on this planning application by February 4 of next year.
