Galway will be the location of one of three specialist menopause clinics around the country to be developed next year.
Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly said on Wednesday that clinics in Galway, Cork and Limerick will approved, funded and developed in 2022.
While the majority of menopause care will continue to be provided through GPs, these clinics are meant to provide another layer of medical care for women with complex symptoms.
The three clinics in Galway and elsewhere will follow on the opening of the first of four publicly funded menopause clinics at the National Maternity Hospital, Holles Street this year.
Funding for these four clinics was ring-fenced through the Women’s Health Fund in Budget 2022.
“As women begin to utilise this specialist service from today, the Department of Health and the Women’s Health Taskforce welcome another important step on the road to better menopause care for women in Ireland,” Minister Donnelly said.
In addition to seeing women who meet the clinical criteria for referral to the service, the clinical team will also reach out to provide advice and guidance to GPs in the community.
This week’s announcement does not specify where in Galway the coming clinic will be located.
