Construction work has begun this week on a new Aldi supermarket for Athenry.
The €11 million supermarket on Clarke Street in Athenry is expected to late next year.
This comes after Galway County Council granted final planning permission for the supermarket this week.
The council granted amendments to the original planning permission, which reduced the overall size of the store from 1,760sqm to 1,660sqm, a reduction in the net retail area of 1,379sqm to 1,170sqm.
The car park, which incorporates 92 parking spaces, will now also include four electric vehicle charging points.
The design of the new store will incorporate natural stonework, meant to echo the medieval town walls that are such a prominent part of Athenry’s past and present.
This will be the tenth Aldi store in Galway, and will create 25 permanent jobs for the area when it opens.
