GMIT has been named Institute of Technology of the Year in the new edition of the Sunday Times Good University Guide out today.
The Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology is among 19 Irish Higher Education institutes featured in the guide, all of which are ranked on eight key performance measures.
One of the major factors that put GMIT over the top was the recent approval from the government for it to create a Technological University together with Sligo and Letterkenny ITs.
Academic restructuring, collaboration with industry, a four-place rise in the overall rankings, and the awarding of the coveted Athena SWAN Bronze accolade also helped clinch GMIT the top spot among IoTs in the guide.
This is the fourth time that the Sunday Times named the Galway college the best of its kind in Ireland.
There is further good news for Galway with the announcement that NUI Galway has won the Sunday Times University of the Year 2022.
Alastair McCall, Education Editor at the Sunday Times said “It is a double triumph for Galway with GMIT carrying off the Institute of Technology of the Year award for a fourth time, just weeks after the announcement that it is to become a Technological University in 2022.”
“The development and ultimate success of that project, coupled with a four-place rise in this year’s league table, helped GMIT to the prize.
“GMIT embodies everything good about the institutes of technology. Outstanding business and industry links translate into good employment options for graduates, while high levels of student engagement are evidence of an institution in tune with its undergraduates.”
With the addition of the technological university designation next year, he added that the future is “looking rosy” for the Galway college.
Our award is recognition of the effort that has gone in to get the institution to this point and of our expectation that this is just a springboard to further success.”
