A third extension of planning permission is being sought to complete construction of 74 houses in Athenry.

Leadlane Athenry Ltd are seeking more time to finish a housing estate under construction at Cullairbaun, Athenry which was first approved in 2007.

The estate will consist of 2 two-storey detached houses; 52 two-storey, semi-detached houses, and five blocks of 4 two-storey, terraced houses each.

The developer is seeking two years added time for the current planning permission, which is due to expire at the end of December.

Two previous Extension of Durations were granted by the county council for the housing estate in 2012 and 2018.

A letter from Clarke Construction Ltd submitted with the EOD application says that substantial works have taken place, with 75% of foundations completed, and a number of houses completed up to the roof level.

“The development has suffered serious delays with the closure of the construction industry due to COVID-19 lockdowns. Since the industry has recommenced there is huge delays with the delivery and sourcing of materials and labour.”

“The contractor is currently trying to work around these obstacles and ha successfully obtained materials for the site, but this has greatly affected his programme for the delivery of houses and has resulted in substantial delays on site.

The foundation works are expected to be completed by the end of this year, with the first houses ready to be handed over to their owners by Q2 of 2022.

Galway County Council is due to make a decision on this EOD application by November 30 of this year.
