Plans for the construction of a new fire station in Loughrea have progressed with the recent appointment of a design team.
Galway TD Seán Canney says that the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage has approved the appointment of the design team for the project.
“Galway County Council have been working on this project and this approval allows for the project to progress to Part 8 Planning, full design, procurement and construction.”
“It is also important to note that the new fire station for Loughrea has been included on the National Capital Schedule for fire stations,” Seán Canney said.
He praised the county council and fire service for their commitment to ensuring that the service is “well equipped and have modern facilities”, and for upgrading fire service infrastructure across the county.
Loughrea is not the only town in Galway to receive a new fire station in recent years, with a station in Tuam opening in 2019, and the planning process has been completed for a new station in Tuam.
A long standing goal of finding a new home for the fire service in Galway City is still ongoing after two decades however, with the city council repeatedly granting retention permission for “temporary” offices on the premise.
