More than 400 drivers around the country were caught speeding during the national Slow Down Day operation.
Over a 24 hours period ending this morning, Gardaí and GoSafe speed cameras checked 192,333 vehicles.
Out of these, 419 vehicles were caught speeding over the limit in the area where they were driving.
One of the examples of drivers endangering others on the road highlighted by Gardaí yesterday was a motorist caught doing 133km/hr on the M6 at Carnmore East.
Outside of Galway some extreme examples caught by Gardaí include a driver doing 114km/hr in a 60km/hr zone on the N62 at Clongower, Thurles in Co. Tipperary
On the M50 at Kilmore Big, Dublin 17, one driver was detected going 116km/hr in a 80km/hr zone, and another was found doing 135km/hr in a 100km/hr zone on the N7 at Brownsbarn, Dublin 22.
An Garda Síochána continues to appeal to drivers to increase compliance with speed limits in order to reduce the number of speed related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on our roads.
For the remainder of the year An Garda Síochána are also running Operation Teorainn, targeting life-threatening road traffic offences.
This comes after a bad summer on the roads this year, with 110 people killed on the roads to date in 2021.
There were 24 people killed on the road in August alone this year, the worst single month for traffic fatalities since June of 2016.
Operation Teorainn is focusing on the four ‘lifesaver’ offences of speeding, driving while intoxicated, not wearing a seatbelt, and holding a mobile phone, as well as unaccompanied learner drivers, plus road transport offences.
The operation will pay particular attention to rural roads with a speed limit of 80km/hr or higher, which have been the site of more than three quarters of road deaths this year.
