Four people are facing prosecution for their part in organising the ‘Golfgate’ event in Clifden last August.
An Garda SÃochána has said that the DPP has directed that four people should face charges for organising an event in contravention of health regulations.
Summons have been lodged with the Courts and District Court dates in relation to each of the individuals are awaited.
The Irish Independent reports that one of those facing prosecution is Galway West TD Noel Grealish, and the other politician to be charged is former Fianna Fáil TD and Senator Donnie Cassidy.
There were over 80 guests in attendance at the Oireachtas Golf Society event at the Station House Hotel in Clifden last August.
Deputy Grealish was the president of the organisation at the time of ‘golfgate’, and Donnie Cassidy was its chairman.
The health regulations in question are Section 31A(6)(a) and (12) of the Health Act 1947 (as amended by Section 10 of the Health (Preservation and Protection and other Emergency Measures in the Public Interest) Act 2020.
The penalty for breaching these regulations is a €2,500 fine or up to six months in prison.
