Galway City Council has gritters on standby ahead of snow and ice forecast tomorrow, Thursday.

A status yellow warning will come into effect at 8am with very cold conditions and low temperatures forecast during the day and severe frosts and icy patches at night.

Snow accumulations of up to 5cm are forecast in some areas and Galway City Council has advised members of the public to take all precautions necessary to stay safe.

The weather warning is due to be lifted on Friday morning at 8am.

“Many people will be working from home but those who do need to travel should exercise extra caution, whether they are driving, cycling or walking,” the Council said today in a statement.

“By taking some simple steps, we can all reduce the impact of such events and cope with them when they happen.

“A range of advice, tips and resources are available online to help to be as prepared as possible such as Be Winter Ready, and on Irish Water’s website.”

The Galway City Community Call Helpline remains available to assist those who may not be able to leave home at the moment, with the delivery of essential supplies or other practical supports on 1800 400 150.

Galway City Council’s Customer Service team is also available from 9am – 5pm from Monday to Friday, with out of hours in operation outside of these times.
