Gardaí have issued over issued over 400 fines for non-essential travel since the introduction of on-the-spot fines last Monday.

More than 300 of the fines were handed out to people over the weekend for suspected breaches of the Level 5 Covid restrictions on travelling.

Before the weekend, An Garda Síochána advised the public they should plan their activities over to take account that people are only allowed to exercise within 5km of their home.

Gardaí say the vast majority of people were compliant with this over the weekend.

The 5km limit includes the distance travelled to a location to exercise, meaning people cannot travel more than 5km to a location to exercise.

By Friday evening, 74 fines for non-essential travel had been processed. The fines issued over the weekend will now be checked and processed, and definitive figures will be available later this week.
