A total of 178 new cases have been reported in Galway this evening by the Department of Health, as the state records yet another record number of cases.
Across the Republic, 7,836 new cases have been reported and 17 further deaths related to the disease.
Of the cases reported today, 2,263 are in Dublin, 1,373 in Cork, 496 in Louth, 345 in Limerick and 340 in Meath.
There are 954 people in in hospital with Covid-19 as of 2pm, of which 88 are in ICU. 67 people are in UHG with the disease and five at Portiuncula. Five of those at UHG with Covid are in ICU.
“The country is in a serious phase of this surge of Covid-19. There is evidence of an increasing presence of the UK variant in Ireland,” said Chief Medical Officer Tony Holohan this evening.
“All counties have an upward trajectory of the disease. There is concerning escalation of admissions to hospital and ICU.
“It has never been more important, throughout our experience of this pandemic, to stay home and only meet people outside of your household for essential purposes, always adhering to public health advice.”
