The number of people at UHG with Covid-19 has jumped to 43 as of 8pm yesterday evening, 16 more than the night before and the largest increase of Covid patients in the State yesterday.

There are four confirmed cases and two suspected cases of Covid-19 at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe, while at UHG two of the 43 Covid patients are in ICU.

There are seven critical care beds available at UHG which is the highest number of available adult ICU beds in the country – but no ICU beds are available at Portiuncula hospital.

A total of ten general beds are free across the Galway hospitals, one at Portiuncula and nine at GUH.

Across the Republic, there are 65 people with Covid-19 in ICU. Of those, 36 are on ventilators.

“Remember that behind each hospital statistic and ICU figure is a real person like you, with a family who cares about them, and a team of healthcare workers dedicated to protecting their lives,” said Chief Medical Officer Tony Holohan yesterday evening, as the number of people in hospital with Covid rose to 685.
