Galway Daily news €2 million allocated for new fire stations in Loughrea and Athenry

Funding to the tune of €2 million has been allocated for the construction of new fire stations in Athenry and Loughrea.

The two Galway fire stations are among €61 million in expenditure on the national fire service approved by the Department of Housing, Local Government, and Heritage this week.

The Athenry station is ready for construction to start immediately, while the Loughrea station has a provisional start date of April 2021 according to the Fire Service Capital Programme.

Galway East TD Ciaran Cannon said that he was pleased to receive the news, in particular for the station staff who do an “excellent job in difficult circumstances”.

“They will shortly have state of the art modern facilities, to continue providing vital emergency services to a massive region of East Galway.”

Galway County Council will also a receive a new fire engine, one of 35 of which there is €16 million allocated for in the capital plan.

Minister Joe O’Brien said “This year of all year’s we are all truly grateful for the work of those on the frontline and in our emergency services.”

“I’d like to thank the staff and crew of all our fire services across the country for their work this year and every year.”
