Pre-booking required for all inter-city train services

Don’t get caught at the station unable to catch train if you’re travelling home for Christmas, as pre-booking is now mandatory on all intercity rail services.

Irish Rail has said that up until January 6, all intercity services must be booked in advance in order to ensure they can deliver COVID-19 capacity measures during Christmas and New Years.

This includes passengers travelling on an intercity train service who are boarding at an intermediate stations.

For people in Galway that applies to all trains headed to or from Dublin Heuston and Limerick City.

Under current Level 3 restrictions, trains are meant to operate at 50% capacity to ensure that social distancing can be delivered.

Inter-county travel is allowed again as of Friday, and is currently set to last until Wednesday, January 6.

People travelling are also being advised by Irish Rail:

  • Please only travel if your journey is necessary, and avoid peak and busier times if at all possible
  • Seating will be unassigned, and customers are asked not to sit in seating designated as restricted, to ensure appropriate distancing
  • Face coverings are mandatory on public transport and in stations
