Galway Daily news Christmas lights ring in the holiday season in Eyre Square

Galway City is getting in the festive spirit, with Eyre Square now lit up each evening by Christmas Lights spearing the sky.

Mayor of Galway Mike Cubbard officially switched on the Christmas lights on Tuesday night, the same day as shops threw open their doors again for the seasonal shopping season.

New to the light shop this year are the ‘Lights of Hope’ which have been installed around the Galway Hooker monument in Eyre Square.

People in the city centre, and far beyond, will be able to see them lighting up the sky from 4pm onwards each day until the New Year.

“These lights of hope come at time as the country exits Level 5 restrictions and are a symbol of the hope of a bright future in 2021 as we look forward to emerging from Covid-19,” the city council said in a social media post.

The council is urging people to enjoy Galway City Centre and to shop local this Christmas to support local businesses and jobs.

But people continue to observe social distancing and all health precautions in order to prevent another resurgence of COVID-19.
