There are almost 1,500 children on a waiting list for an eye care assessment at Tuam Primary Care Centre according to the HSE.

In total there are 1,450 children waiting for a Community ophthalmology/Orthoptic assessment at the Primary Care Centre.

There are a further 70 children waiting for Community Medical Doctor appointments at the Centre.

The figures was provided by the HSE in response to a query by councillor Donagh Killilea for a meeting of the Regional Health Forum this week.

Councillor Killilea said that more money needs to be thrown at the problem, stressing that there was a two and a half year waiting list for an assessment before COVID.

Breda Crehan-Roche, Chief Officer, Community Healthcare West, said that a full-time ophthalmologist post is expected to be filled at the Primary Care Centre early next year.

Councillor Killilea stressed the importance of this issue by saying that early intervention is crucial for children in need of eye care, and that it should be done before the child is three years old.
