Veteran Galway United striker Vinny Faherty has announced that he is retiring, bringing his prestigious 14 year career to an end.
The 33 year old Moycullen has appeared for Galway United more than 200 times, and scored almost 50 goals for his hometown club.
In the course of a long career in soccer, Faherty has also played for St. Patrick’s Athletic, Sligo Rovers, Limerick and Dundalk in the League of Ireland, as well as abroad.
He return to Galway United in 2019, a decade after his breakthrough stint with the club.
In a statement announcing his retirement, Faherty said that as a childhood fan of United, he never could have imagined representing his hometown club, and thanked everyone who has welcomed him into their club down the years.
“After 14 seasons it’s time to hang up the boots. I never thought as a 6 year old going to Galway United games that I’d ever have the opportunity to represent the club at the highest level in the country.”
“The fact that I got to do it so often and finish as the 3rd highest goal scorer in the clubs history is definitely something I never could have imagined. I’d like to thank everyone along the way that helped me achieve that.”

It was always a huge privilege.”
