Galway Daily news Public consultation launched on proposed city Bus Corridor

A public consultation has been launched on a proposed Bus Corridor on the old Dublin Road in Galway City meant to improve local public, cyclist, and pedestrian transport.

The proposed multi-modal Bus Corridor would provide 4km of high quality pedestrian, cycling, and public transport infrastructure.

The route will run from the Martin Roundabout to the Moneenageisha Junction to become the main public transport route for city neighbourhoods along the Dublin Road.

The project is intended to provide improved journeys times and safer, more accessible travel to Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT), Merlin Park Hospital, Galway Hospice and hotels, residential schemes, sports grounds and commercial premises along the route.

Sarah O’Donnell, Project Architect for TII, commented that the plan takes into account the many distinct features along the existing road corridor, including the Meadows proposal, which will incorporate a two-way cycle path.

She notes that the team sought to provide high quality multi-modal infrastructure whilst ensuring the least impact on the route’s distinctive green belt and stone walls and the least intrusion on existing lands and homes.

Galway City Council is inviting people to view information on the proposed scheme, and give their feedback, in a ‘virtual information room’.

Speaking about the information room Uinsinn Finn, Senior Engineer with Galway City Council, said that it had been created due to COVID-19 restrictions to allow the public to access information including project documentation and maps.

“The purpose of the consultation is to invite feedback, questions and support for the Emerging Preferred Option, to help inform the scheme design as it proceeds through the planning process

The public consultation will run for a total of six weeks. View the virtual room online here.
