Galway Daily news Galway hospitals see COVID cases double in recent weeks

The Department of Health has confirmed 470 new cases of COVID-19 in the Republic of Ireland as well as one further death related to the disease.

Just eleven of the additional confirmed cases are in Galway, while 198 are in Dublin, 61 are in Cork and 36 are in Donegal.

Including today’s increase in cases, there have now been 797 confirmed cases in Galway city and county since the start of the pandemic.

Of the additional cases, 68% are under 45 years of age and 40% are confirmed to be associated with outbreaks or are close contacts of a confirmed case.

“The situation nationally is a matter of serious concern and NPHET is now recommending that no more than 2 households should meet at any given time,” said Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn.

“It is vital that everyone – families, friends and neighbours – limit the opportunities this virus has to move from person to person and stop the spread of the disease across households.

“Behave as though you have the virus and keep yourself and those around you safe – don’t take a risk by organising or attending gatherings with more than one other household.”

A total of 1,404 cases have been confirmed across the island of Ireland today after the North recorded 934 new positive test results earlier today.
