Galway Daily news Kinvara to receive €40k for flood defence barriers

Funding for emergency flood relief barriers to protect at a number of at risk properties in Kinvara is being provided by the Office of Public Works.

Galway East TD Ciaran Cannon has said that the OPW will provide €40,000 to Galway County Council for barriers to block water from getting through doorways in homes and businesses that frequently flood.

“Anyone living in Kinvara is more than aware of the regular flooding of the quay and adjacent areas with consequent flooding of homes and businesses.”

“I’ve been working with Cllr. Joe Byrne in looking at a unique solution to this problem, individual emergency flood relief barriers for each doorway.

“Joe has worked with Council colleagues to make a funding application to the OPW and I have worked with previous Minister Kevin Boxer Moran and current Minister Patrick O’Donovan to secure the necessary funding.”

Kinvara Quay, and the nearby properties, have been repeatedly flooded after heavy rains, such as in 2014 and towards the end of 2017.

In December of 2019, the County Council highlighted 25 properties in the proximity of the Quay that were in need of protection in a report to the OPW.

Councillor Byrne said that in the past year or so, of frustration with a perceived lack of progress, some residents have resorted to buying flood barriers themselves to protect their homes and businesses.
