Galway daily news COVID-19 cases more than double at UHG

There were just 17 new cases of COVID-19 confirmed in Galway last month, one of the lower levels of incidences in the country.

As of August 1, there were 498 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Galway City and County, and by the end of that month there were 515 known cases.

This represents an increase in the cumulative cases in Galway of just 3.41%, not only is that not comparable with hotspots such as Dublin and Kildare, but also better than other counties in the west and northwest with lower population densities.

Sligo saw its cumulative case numbers go up from 149 to 155 in August, an increase of 4.02%. While in Donegal, last month saw their confirmed cases go up from 476 to 537, an increase of 12.8% in their cumulative numbers.

Mayo and Leitrim both had more promising figures than Galway, with just a single confirmed new case in Leitrim in August, while Mayo had five cases, for an end of month cumulative total of 588.

A county breakdown of cases on the Department of Health’s COVID-19 Dashboard currently only has the case figures up to August 30, however, none of the cases reported by NPHET on the last day of the month were recorded in Galway.

The single largest spike in Galway last month was on August 14, when six new cases were confirmed in one day, coming after four days in a row with no new cases.

Other than that there was only a single other day in the month with more than one COVID-19 case, with two cases on August 25.

Nationwide, there were an additional 2,702 cases of COVID-19 in August, with an end of month total of 28,811 cases.

This means that while Galway accounts of 1.8% of all cases in the Republic of Ireland in the coronavirus pandemic, just 0.63 of last month’s cases were here.

There were 217 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported by NPHET on Tuesday, bringing the national total in the coronavirus pandemic to 29,025.

The coronavirus pandemic has claimed 1,777 lives in the Republic of Ireland to date.
