Galway City Council has imposed a swimming ban on Ballyloughane beach this weekend due to the possibility of increased bacteria levels from heavy rain.

Warning notices have been erected at the beach, and the ban is expected to remain in place until at Monday, August 24.

“Bathers are advised of the possibility of an increase in the levels of bacteria in the bathing water over the coming days due to forecasted increased rainfall and possible activation of storm overflow.”

An update on the situation will be provided by the city council next Wednesday or Thursday after water quality test results are received.

A prior warning notice has been put in place for Grattan beach for the same period due to similar reasons.

While not a swimming ban, people are advised to avoid splashing or swallowing water, and to avoid the water if you have a compromised immune system.
