Galway City Council has become the latest local authority to support the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan which aims to improve biodiversity across the island by helping pollinators.

Almost one third of Ireland’s 99 different types of bees are threatened by extinction because of the drastic reduction in the amount of flowers and safe nesting sites across the country.

The action plan is calling everyone, from farmers and local authorities to schools and gardeners, to come together to create an Ireland where pollinators can survive and thrive.

The plan is supported by over 90 organisations across the island – and the majority of councils are already taking actions to support pollinators on public land.

Many are also working with local community groups, residents’ associations and schools to help raise awareness of the All-Ireland plan.

By becoming a formal partner, Galway City Council has agreed to support the plan and take it into consideration when deciding policies and making management decisions where possible.

It has also agreed to carry out one action to help pollinators in the first year after signing up and to carry out at least three more positive actions within the following five years.
