Absence makes the heart grow fonder, and while people are confined to their homes the county council is inviting everyone to help celebrate the heritage of Galway.

The Galway Beo project asks people to send in a photograph, drawing, poem or story to help celebrate the wonderful heritage of Galway.

Our heritage is all around us in a country as old and storied as Ireland. It’s in our graveyards, in old homes, in parts of the street we pass every day.

If you’re feeling a bit restless, and wistful for being out and about, then try composing a few words about your favourite bits of Galway’s history.

And while we may be on lockdown, that doesn’t mean you can’t stretch your legs at all.

If your walking route takes you past a piece of heritage with a story worth hearing, or that’s just a beautiful part of the landscape, then snap a photo and send it in for everyone that can’t go see it themselves.

“If taking photographs while out and about for your exercise, do not forget to comply with Physical Distancing guidelines and keep to within 2km of your home only,” a reminder from the council says.

The Galway Beo project is an initiative of the heritage office at the county council, working with communities around Galway.

Cllr Jimmy McClearn, Cathaoirleach of the County of Galway said: “I am delighted that the Heritage Office, Galway County Council has initiative this very positive project and I look forward to seeing all aspects of the wonderful and diverse heritage that can be seen in our county.”
