The number of patients forced to wait on a trolley for a bed in Galway’s hospitals has dropped to zero as appointments are deferred and people are told to stay away from the A&E in the Covid-19 outbreak.

There is not a single patient on trolley at UHG or Portiuncula Hospital Ballinasloe today according to the INMO, after just one person went without a bed in University Hospital Galway last Friday.

The latest figures from the INMO show that the number of patients without a bed in Ireland’s hospitals has dropped to just 35 people nationwide.

The single highest number on trolleys today is at St. Vincent’s University Hospital in Dublin, where there are nine patients without a bed.

Aside from UHG, usual suspects such as Cork UH, and South Tipperary hospital also have zero people waiting for a bed, while at UH Limerick there is just one person on a trolley.

This comes as the Saolta Hospital Group has just announced that it is deferring all but the most urgent appointments and procedures in order to ensure it has the capacity to deal with an increase in Covid-19 cases.

Patients are being contacted to inform them that their appointments are being cancelled,

Visiting restrictions which were imposed last week across the Saolta Group are also continuing until further notice.
