Ireland has a rich architectural history from many eras, with houses, churches and other protected structures in need of conservation.

Those in Galway who are responsible for protected structures, whether they live in one or have it on their land, are being urged to apply for conservation grans from the Irish Georgian Society.

The Irish Georgian Society has fundraised a total of €50,000 which will be awarded to preserve protected structures and recorded monuments of significant architectural merit in its Conservation Grants Programme 2020.

Galway East Seán Canney said that this is “an opportunity for the owners of buildings of architectural interest and heritage value to receive much-needed funding for maintenance and improvement.

“The vision of the Irish Georgian Society is to conserve, protect and foster an interest and respect for Ireland’s architectural heritage and decorative arts.”

Over the past six years the society has funded 30 conservation projects around Ireland, which have included castles, thatched cottages and historic townhouses, architectural follies, and churches.

Decisions on the recipients of the 2020 grant scheme will be made in early May, at which points the successful applicants will be informed.

The closing date for grant applications is 5pm on Monday March 5, and more details about the grant programme can be found here.
