Galway’s traffic lights at major junctions will now be monitored and maintained week round thanks to a new maintenance contract.
The Department of Transport has entered into a four year contract with the Elmore Group to maintain all aspects of the city’s Traffic Control and Signalling equipment such as traffic lights.
The contract, which covers hardware, databases, software, firmware and licences, includes responding to signal outages at major junctions at any time of the day or night, seven days a week.
Previously the city had only been covered by a 5-day a week, Monday to Friday contract.
Councillor Ollie Crowe said that the contract upgrade has been confirmed to him by City Manager Brendan McGrath, calling it a very welcome announcement.
Councillor Crowe is standing for for Fianna Fáil in the general election as the running mate of sitting TD Eamon Ó Cúiv in Galway West.
In addition to the traffic lights maintenance, Councillor Crowe said that contracts have also been signed for N6 Bothar na dTreabh and N84 Headford Road resurfacing works.
These roadworks are due to commence in the first quarter of 2020.
