The new €2.5 million Intreo Centre planned for Tuam has moved forward, as tenders have now been issued for its construction.
The new Intreo Centre will be built on the site of the Old Library in Shop Street and is part of the regeneration plan for Tuam Town Centre.
Galway East TD Seán Canney said that this is very welcome news for Tuam which will help to improve local services.
Intreo was created by the Department of Social Protection as a single point of contact for social welfare and all other employment and income supports.
“It will bring together all social welfare services and the refurbishment of the Old Library will effectively open up a new public building in the centre of Tuam.”
“Contractors for the tender have been pre-qualified and all leases and legal issues have been resolved,” he added.
The Independent TD said that he expects construction work to begin in the second quarter of this year.
“I advanced this project when I was Minister of State in the Office of Public Works and have held discussions with OPW officials on a number of occasions since to ensure that it progresses.”
“There were delays around previous planning permission but planning permission was approved early last year and I now look forward to the building’s completion.”
