Galway GAA is planning to erect a new set of floodlights to light up Pearse Stadium in Salthill after securing planning permission from the city council.

The County Board is sought an extension of planning permission which will allow it to put up five new sets of floodlights.

Two of the new columns will be 36.6m high while the remaining three will stand 30.48m tall.

Each column will be fitted with between 33 and 40 light fixtures which will provide light levels of 500 lux vertical and, on occasion, 1000 lux horizontal.

The City Council had granted planning permission for these works in January 2015, but the county board didn’t move ahead with the project at that time.

“Due to the extensive programme of work being carried out for ground developments to other GAA stadiums throughout County Galway i.e Loughgeorge, Tuam etc, by Galway GAA, the development granted under Pl. Ref. No. 13/97 & APB Pl. 61.243843 has not fallen within the financial budget and financial programme of works in order to enable the subject works to be carried out.”

“Also, due to the recession and downturn in the economic climate, attendances at fixtures across the county and country had deplenished and as such, and to date, it was not a viable venture to commence with the proposed development”.

“However, as other development works are being completed and with the upturn in the economy we are confident that the proposed development will fall within the programme of works for the year commencing 01/01/2021.”

“Although we do envisage that the development will be completed before 2022 we are requesting the maximum extension period of 5 years.”

Galway City Council granted an unconditional extension of planning permission to Galway GAA for the work at Pearse Stadium.
