The official Galway 2020 programme was showcased in Rome at an event held in the offices of the European Representation in Italy last week.

The Embassy of Ireland in Italy co-hosted the event along with the Embassy of Croatia. Rijeka in Croatia shares the European Capital of Culture 2020 designation with Galway.

Speaking in the Italian capital, Marilyn Gaughan Reddan, Head of Programme at Galway 2020 said: “We are delighted to be here in Rome with our Rijeka colleagues and friends to have the opportunity to showcase our cultural programme for 2020.

“We are grateful to the Embassies of both countries for co-hosting this great event.

“There was a huge appetite in the room for information on the programme which is so encouraging and really adds to the sense of momentum.”

Speaking at the event, Chiara Popplewell First Secretary of Irish Embassy in Italy said “European Capitals of Culture allow us to celebrate our shared cultures together, it is fantastic that Galway in Ireland is hosting the title with Rijeka in Croatia in 2020 and we were delighted to be able to offer both teams the opportunity to showcase their programmes here in Rome.”

Galway 2020 is the largest and most complex cultural event ever undertaken on the island of Ireland comprising over 1,900 events across 154 projects, 170 partnerships and collaborations with local, national, European and international artists and cultural organisations from over 30 different countries.
