UHG is the second most overcrowded hospital in Ireland today with 43 patients on trolleys.
The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation takes a daily count of the number of people on trolleys in the ED and wards at UHG and all public hospitals.
The worst affected hospital is UH Limerick where there are 56 patients without a proper bed.
Also in Galway, there are a further ten patients on trolleys at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe.
All told there are 485 hospital patients without a bed today according to the INMO.
The nurses union says that chronic overcrowding is partially due to a severe shortage of nurses amid a retention crisis.
Despite this it’s been reported that, of the 70 student nurses at UHG graduating in the coming weeks, only 25 will be offered jobs in the health service.
