Galway city should embrace the target of becoming carbon neutral by 2023 says Fianna Fáil councillor Alan Cheevers.
Councillor Cheevers said there are a number of policy changes that the city council could make to meet the target of a carbon neutral city in the next four years.
Galway city council should encourage the move to electric or bio fuel vehicles, while also publishing an annual break down of carbon savings each year.
The council should also look to its own house first in making changes Councillor Cheevers said, suggesting that city hall should be outfitted with solar panels to generate electricity and promote renewable energy.
He warned that “The changes in our climate are very real and are changing almost every aspect of Irish life. If we don’t make proactive changes this may damage Galway and our climate for generations to come.”
“There are other aspects we need to look for. This would include a community lead hydro electric generator on waterways in Galway City.”
“They City Council should also look toward Department funding from central government to progress these climate action policies,” concluded Councillor Cheevers.
