Galway Daily news The People Build arts festival event delayed due to weather warning

One of the biggest street events of Galway International Arts Festival has had to be delayed due to a weather warning issued today.

Galway Arts Festival is welcoming back French artists The People Build for the third year running to create a massive cardboard monument with the help of hundreds of local volunteers in Eyre Square.

The building phase of this event was meant to take place today, but has been pushed back as Met Eireann have issued a weather warning for thunderous rain.

Needless to say, cardboard and heavy rain do not mix and the decision has been made by the arts festival not to jeapordise this much loved event with fickle weather.

“Due to the weather forecast for today, The People Build construction due to take place from 11am – 4pm today has been postponed until tomorrow, Saturday,” a statement from GIAF said.

“Construction will take place in Eyre Square from 11am – 4pm this Saturday 20 July and the demolition will take place Sunday at 4pm as scheduled.”

“Galway International Arts Festival would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Olivier Grossetête’s spectacular architectural project The People Build has captured the imaginations of people in Galway for the past two festivals where iconic local structures were raised in Eyre Square out of cardboard, and then torn down for some mad craic.

Returning for its third year in 2019, this year’s project will be a construction of Galway Cathedral’s steeple. This is a free, family friendly event and all are welcome to attend.

The People Build is supported by Walsh Waste, who are supplying and recycling all of the cardboard being used, and the Embassy of France in Ireland.
