St. Mary’s GAA club in Athenry is upgrading its club facilities with three new pitches, a ballwall, and a walking path.
The GAA club at Carnaun, Athenry recently received planning permission for two new grass pitches, and all weather astro-turf pitch, ballwall, walking path, and associated site works.
In May the county council asked St. Mary’s GAA Club to revise the positioning of the all weather pitch so that they were not on top of the percolation area and stormwater soakway for the approved dressing room building.
Only one submission was made to the council concerning this project from the Department of Culture, Heritage, and the Gaeltacht noting that the development is in close proximity to a historical ringfort.
The department said that “Given the scale, extent, and location of the proposed development it is possible that subsurface archaeological remains could be encountered during the construction phases that involve ground disturbance”.
It recommended that archaeological monitoring should take place during construction work at the GAA club.
Galway county council granted planning permission with seven conditions attached, including a stipulation that the all weather pitch shall not be used an later than 10pm.
