Plans for a new housing estate on the Letteragh road in the city have been appealed to An Bord Pleanála.
Centento Ltd secured planning permission from the city council in June for a housing estate with 64 homes on the Letteragh road.
The estate will consist of 25 one, two, and three bedroom houses and 39 apartment homes in four separate three storey blocks.
The site for this estate is an undeveloped greenfield location between the existing housing estates of Cnoc An Óir, Sliobh Rioga, and Breacan.
Centento said that the design would “integrate with the emerging character of the area, whilst introducing an urban grain which will respect the public realm and enhance the amenities of the area”.
A total of six submissions were received by the city council prior to the grant of planning permission concerned about issues with traffic, the character of the development, parking, and potential flooding.
The new housing development will be accessed off the east side of the Letteragh road via a stop control junction to be installed near the entrance to Cnoc An Óir.
A Road Safety Audit carried out for this project said that “A road widening scheme for this section of the Letteragh Road is proposed by Galway city council and the scheme includes a set back as required by the city council.”
“The road widening scheme will incorporate 2.0m wide on-road cycle lanes. This road widening scheme has been included with the proposed development.”
However objectors said that road widening and cycling infrastructure should be incorporated as part of the design, and not dependent on future action by the city council.
The RSA also recommended installing new signage indication the upcoming junction for southbound traffic and adding more public lighting along the road.
Concerns were also expressed about the duplex blocks, which face out on the Letteragh road, with locals saying they are out of character with the surrounding area.
Centento was required to lodge €633,108 with the city council towards the provision of public services in the area.
The city council’s decision to grant planning permission was appealed to An Bord Pleanala by a local resident on July 7.
Sliabh Na Ri Management Company also sought to lodge an appeal with the higher planning authority, but that application was deemed invalid.
An Bord Pleanála is due to make a decision on this matter by November 6.
