The updated Athenry Wastewater Treatment Plant is set to be officially opened next week.

The project will ensure that the capacity of the Athenry plant will increase to support a population equivalent of 9,500 and will be a major benefit to local commercial development.

Minister Ciaran Cannon welcomed the forthcoming opening by his colleague Minister Eoghan Murphy, and said he was delighted to have campaigned for this development.

The Galway TD, who turned the first sod on the project in 2017, said the updated treatment plant will open on 8 July.

Minister Cannon said: “The works represent a €5m investment by Irish Water and will ensure that wastewater arising from Athenry is treated and discharged in compliance with the Urban Wastewater Treatment regulations.

‘The upgrade to sewerage facilities is also crucial to facilitating connection to the public system for existing housing estates in the district without the need for the number of small plants which so far have served these estates”.

He added that this project will ensure that the capacity of the Athenry plant will increase to support a population equivalent to 9,500 and will be a major benefit to commercial development the town and its environs.
