Homelessness is one of the greatest social scourges facing Galway right now, and people who want to help fight it can Take a Dip at Dawn in support of Galway Simon this month.
The Galway Simon Community are organising their second annual Dip at Dawn on Friday, July 5 at Ladies Beach in Salthill to raise funds and awareness for their efforts to fight homelessness.
The day will begin with with a short yoga session followed by a dip in the sea down by Salthill.
The yoga Sun Salutation will be led by Yoga Shala co-owner, Laragh Cunningham and her team, while Catriona Lynch of Ebb and Flow will lead the dip in the sea.
The Jungle Beach Cafe will also be on hand to serve hot drinks to warm people up after the swim.
“The crisis in the West is at its worst point since Galway Simon Community was established 40 years ago,” said Deirdre Treacy of Galway Simon
“Far too many women, men, young adults and children are experiencing the trauma of homelessness.”
“That is why were are asking people to take action this year, to help more people on their Journey Home, and Dip at Dawn is the perfect way to do this”
Last year’s event saw over 160 people participate on the longest day of the year, with huge support pouring in from the wider community.
Participants said that the event was “invigorating”, “refreshing” and “the most fabulous thing”.
One participant commented “It was a great cause and a beautiful idea. Lovely to share such a moment with others.”
“By taking part in Dip at Dawn, you are helping us to raise vital funds to support people in our local community who may have no place to call home or are facing the fear of homelessness,” Deirdre Treacy said.
“We are asking people to take a short time out of their morning and take part in a fun event, to help others on their Journey Home.”
Registration for this event is €25 and can be done online here, with all proceeds going directly to the Galway Simon Community.
