A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a US student in Connemara over the May Bank Holiday weekend.

The 19 year old student who is visiting Ireland with her US university reported a sexual assault which allegedly took place at Tully Cross on Sunday, May 5.

At the time of the alleged sexual assault the young woman was with a group of fellow students attending the Connemara Mussel Festival and socialising in Tully Cross.

A Garda spokesperson said that a man (17) was arrested on May 7 and questioned at Clifden Garda Station in connection with the incident.

He was detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 and later released without charge.

A file is now being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Gardaí have said that due to the nature of the investigation, no further statement will be made.
