Galway Daily news Government to help fund building student accommodation in Galway

The sexual assault treatment unit is expected to receive a boost in funding in response to increased demand for services.

An additional half a million in funding for Ireland’s six sexual assault treatment units is expected to be announced by Health Minister Simon Harris today along with the appointment of additional forensic nurses and medical examiners.

There are currently six SATU units in operation in Galway, Dublin, Cork, Mullingar, Letterkenny, and Waterford.

The Galway Sexual Assault Treatment Unit is located in a dedicated building near Galway Racecourse with services including medical care, the option of a forensic examination and having a garda officer present to make a criminal complaint, and Galway Rape Crisis Centre psychological support workers.

The Irish Times reports that a policy review being published today calls for increased resources to keep these services sustainable, as well as the introduction of long-term holistic care.

It reportedly says that staffing levels need to be increased to deal with systemic under-management, while praising staff for their dedication in providing this important service.

As of next year the scope of services on offer is expected to expand while investment will increase by between €250,000 to €800,000.
