The old Connacht Tribune printworks could become the latest new addition to Galway’s food scene, with plans in the making to convert
Ortamount Ltd applied for planning permission from the city council to convert the printworks, paper store, and associated spaces into an indoor food market and dining area.
According to the planning documentation, the market space could also be used for small events related to arts and culture.
The Connacht Tribune would remain a tenant of the main building connected to the printworks.
The project has received broad support from Galway’s food and business communities, with letters of support submitted to the city council by Galway Chamber, Galway Food Festival, EAT Galway, The Latin Quarter, Galway City Business Association, and Anthony Ryan’s
Galway Chamber of Commerce said that it would “greatly enhance Galway’s offering as a food destination”.
The Chamber added that it would “provide opportunities for local suppliers to bring their products to Galway locals and visitors alike”.
A decision in this planning application is due from the city council by April 9.
